Las premiadas fueron presentadas por el rector, Santiago Garc\u00eda Granda, que les ha dado la bienvenida a la Universidad de Oviedo y ha subrayado la expectaci\u00f3n con la que el centro esperaba este encuentro, y por el decano de la Facultad, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Rico Ord\u00e1s, quien puso de relieve algunos de los logros cient\u00edficos de las ponentes. Joanne Chory y Sandra Myrna D\u00edaz tambien estuvieron acompa\u00f1adas por la vicerrectora de Estudiantes, Elisa Migu\u00e9lez; el vicerrector de Investigaci\u00f3n, Jos\u00e9 Ram\u00f3n Obeso; y el consejero de Ciencia, Innovaci\u00f3n y Universidad, Borja S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La primera en intervenir en este acto, organizado en el marco de la colaboraci\u00f3n con la Fundaci\u00f3n Princesa de Asturias, fue <strong>Joanne Chory<\/strong>, <strong>reconocida por sus investigaciones sobre los mecanismos que regulan el funcionamiento de las plantas<\/strong> y c\u00f3mo reaccionan a condiciones ambientales de estr\u00e9s. Asimismo, la cient\u00edfica ha profundizado en el desarrollo de plantas que puedan absorber mucho m\u00e1s di\u00f3xido de carbono que las normales, para lo cual lidera la iniciativa Harnessing Plant. El objetivo no es otro que contribuir a la lucha contra el calentamiento global. Y es que Joanne Chory tiene la firme voluntad de &#8220;formar parte de la soluci\u00f3n&#8221;. &#8220;Nuestra mayor responsabilidad es ser buenos ancestros&#8221;, ha afirmado, citando al reconocido vir\u00f3logo Jonas Salk, y para ello puso de relieve que hay que replantearse el problema del CO2. La investigadora propone aprovechar los beneficios de plantas modificadas gen\u00e9ticamente para que tengan m\u00e1s ra\u00edces y m\u00e1s profundas, y que produzcan mayor cantidad del pol\u00edmero natural conocido como &#8220;suberina&#8221;, que ayuda a retener el di\u00f3xido de carbono.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Por su parte, <strong>Sandra Myrna D\u00edaz<\/strong>, que se ha mostrado &#8220;orgullosa y emocionada por este honor y por el fant\u00e1stico recibimiento de toda la comunidad de Asturias&#8221;, abord\u00f3, entre otras cuestiones, c\u00f3mo <strong>encontrar patrones generales subyacentes a la abrumadora biodiversidad de plantas<\/strong>. De hecho, la investigadora, catedr\u00e1tica de Ecolog\u00eda de la Universidad Nacional de C\u00f3rdoba, ha sido distinguida por su participaci\u00f3n en el desarrollo de un m\u00e9todo para cuantificar los efectos y beneficios de dicha biodiversidad.
